Kwankwaso Says North Should Not Always Produce Nigeria's President

Former Kano State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) vice-presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has said the North should not always produce Nigeria's president, insisting that leadership should rotate fairly among the country's regions in the interest of national unity. Speaking at a stakeholders' meeting in Kano, Kwankwaso said Nigeria's diversity demands an inclusive approach to power-sharing rather than the dominance of any particular region.

Kwankwaso argued that the country would be better served by a leadership arrangement that gives every region a sense of belonging. He maintained that competence and national interest should remain the primary considerations in choosing leaders, while stressing that equitable power rotation would help strengthen Nigeria's democracy and reduce political tensions.

The former governor also urged political leaders to place the country's unity above sectional interests as preparations for the 2027 general election gather momentum. He said Nigerians should focus on electing leaders capable of addressing the nation's economic and security challenges rather than allowing regional sentiments to dominate political discourse.

His comments come amid ongoing debates over zoning and power rotation ahead of the 2027 elections, with political parties and stakeholders weighing different options for presidential candidates. The issue has remained a recurring topic in Nigeria's political landscape as parties position themselves for the next electoral cycle.
