Iyabo Obasanjo Rejoins PDP, Holds Joint Rally With Adebutu Ahead of 2027 Polls
Dr. Iyabo Obasanjo has returned to the PDP and joined governorship candidate Oladipupo Adebutu in a rally in Ogun State, signaling renewed political engagement ahead of the 2027 elections.
Dr. Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has formally returned to the Peoples Democratic Party and is set to participate in a joint political rally with the party’s governorship candidate in Ogun State, Oladipupo Adebutu.
According to information contained in a campaign flyer, the rally is expected to commence from the Shagamu Interchange and proceed to the PDP State Secretariat in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
The development marks a significant political move by Iyabo Obasanjo, who recently resigned from the All Progressives Congress following disagreements with the party leadership in Ogun State.
Sources close to the former Ogun State Commissioner for Health confirmed that preparations for the rally were ongoing and that the event would serve as a platform to mobilise support for the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.
A political associate familiar with the arrangements said the rally would feature both Obasanjo and Adebutu and form part of broader campaign activities involving the party’s governorship and senatorial structures in the state.
Iyabo Obasanjo’s return to the PDP comes after months of dissatisfaction with the APC in Ogun State. She had previously expressed interest in contesting for the governorship ticket of the party before the emergence of Senator Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, as the consensus candidate.
She had publicly stated that she was not consulted before the decision to adopt Adeola as the party’s preferred governorship candidate. Despite her reservations, she initially pledged to respect the decision of the party leadership.
However, she later cited what she described as a lack of respect and recognition from party leaders as one of the reasons for her departure from the APC.
Political observers say her return to the PDP could strengthen the opposition party’s campaign efforts in Ogun State ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly given her political profile and influence.
The rally is expected to attract party supporters, stakeholders and political leaders from different parts of the state as campaigns gradually gather momentum ahead of the next electoral cycle.
