INEC Displays Tinubu, Shettima's Credentials for Public Scrutiny Ahead of 2027 Polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the statutory public display of the personal particulars and academic credentials submitted by President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima as the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential and vice-presidential candidates for the 2027 general election. The exercise, conducted in line with the Electoral Act, allows members of the public to examine the documents and raise objections where necessary.

Documents displayed by the commission include completed nomination forms, academic certificates and other supporting records submitted by the APC candidates. According to INEC, the publication marks the beginning of the public verification process, which enables any individual with credible evidence challenging the authenticity of a candidate's submission to seek legal redress within the period provided by law.

A copy of President Tinubu's Form EC9 displayed by the commission includes his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Chicago State University, awarded with honours in 1979, alongside other personal particulars submitted for the election. Vice President Shettima's academic credentials and statutory documents were also made available for public inspection.

The publication of the documents follows the close of political parties' nomination processes and precedes the commencement of campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections, scheduled to begin on August 19 under INEC's revised timetable. Political parties and candidates are expected to complete other legal requirements before the campaigns officially commence.

INEC urged Nigerians to take advantage of the public display period to scrutinise the documents in accordance with the law, stressing that the process is designed to promote transparency and accountability in the electoral system. The commission noted that any objections to the credentials or personal particulars of candidates must be pursued through the legal procedures outlined in the Electoral Act.
