Former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, has said he played a role in the emergence of President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 general elections.

Fayemi made the disclosure during an interview on State Affairs, a podcast hosted by Edmund Obilo, where he reflected on the political dynamics that shaped the election outcome.

He described the performance of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as a “political phenomenon” that significantly altered Nigeria’s traditional electoral calculations.

According to him, the 2023 election exposed deep divisions within the political system and demonstrated the growing demand for more inclusive governance.

Fayemi also acknowledged ongoing challenges within the All Progressives Congress, noting that the party had drifted away from some of its founding ideals.

He stressed that Nigeria cannot continue to operate a winner-takes-all political structure that excludes large segments of the population from governance and decision-making.

The former governor called for more inclusive politics, credible and transparent party primaries, and broader restructuring of the Nigerian federation to strengthen unity and stability.

He said political participation and internal democracy within parties must be improved to restore public trust in governance.

Fayemi’s comments come amid continued debate over the outcome and implications of the 2023 presidential election, which saw Tinubu declared winner in a tightly contested race involving major opposition candidates.
