Group, Leo Stan Ekeh Foundation Call for Revival of Igbo Language and Cultural Values

A cultural advocacy group, in partnership with the Leo Stan Ekeh Foundation, has renewed calls for the revival of the Igbo language and the preservation of traditional values, warning that the gradual decline in the use of indigenous languages poses a serious threat to the region's cultural identity. The organisations urged families, schools and community leaders to take deliberate steps to promote the language among younger generations.

Speaking during a cultural engagement programme, stakeholders stressed that language remains one of the strongest symbols of identity and heritage. They expressed concern that many young Igbo people are increasingly unable to speak their native language fluently, attributing the trend to changing lifestyles, urbanisation and the growing preference for foreign languages.

The Leo Stan Ekeh Foundation emphasised that preserving the Igbo language should go beyond classroom instruction, encouraging parents to communicate with their children in their mother tongue at home. It also called for greater investment in cultural education, literature and digital initiatives that make indigenous languages more appealing to young people.

Participants at the event noted that safeguarding cultural values is essential for strengthening community identity and passing important traditions from one generation to the next. They urged governments, educational institutions and private organisations to support programmes that celebrate local languages and cultural heritage.

The renewed campaign comes amid growing concerns over the declining use of several indigenous Nigerian languages. Advocates believe that sustained collaboration between public institutions, cultural organisations and families will be key to ensuring that the Igbo language continues to thrive for future generations.
