Glasgow 2026: Nigeria Sets Commonwealth Games Record in Mixed 4x400m Relay

Team Nigeria continued its impressive showing at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Friday by setting a new Commonwealth Games record in the inaugural Mixed 4x400m Relay while qualifying for more medal events.

The Nigerian quartet of Edidiong Udo, Esther Joseph, Samuel Ogazi and Patience Okon-George delivered a dominant performance to win their qualifying heat in a record time of 3:14.58.

Their performance established the first-ever Commonwealth Games record in the newly introduced Mixed 4x400m Relay event and secured qualification for the final as the fastest team.

Australia finished second in the heat with a time of 3:15.21, trailing the Nigerian team, which now heads into the final as one of the leading contenders for the gold medal.

The achievement also ensured the Nigerian athletes became the first record holders in the history of the event at the Commonwealth Games.

In the field events, Ruth Usoro also booked her place in the women’s long jump final after producing a season’s best leap of 6.77 metres with her opening attempt.

The jump exceeded the automatic qualification mark of 6.70 metres, guaranteeing her a place in the medal round without requiring additional attempts.

Nigeria also remained firmly in contention in the men’s decathlon, where Jami Schlueter occupied fourth position after six events with a total of 5,099 points.

The decathlete is expected to complete his campaign later in the day with the javelin throw and the 1,500 metres, events that could improve his position and possibly earn him a podium finish.

Team Nigeria’s busy schedule continues later on Friday with several athletes competing in medal events.

Ezekiel Nathaniel will feature in the men’s 400 metres hurdles final, while Chinecherem Nnamdi is set to contest the men’s javelin final.

Sprint star Udodi Onwuzurike will also line up in the men’s 200 metres final as he targets another medal for Nigeria.

With a Commonwealth Games record already secured and several athletes progressing to finals, confidence continues to grow within the Nigerian camp.

Officials believe the country’s athletes are well positioned to increase Nigeria’s medal tally before the conclusion of the Games.

The latest performances further reinforce Nigeria’s status as Africa’s top-performing nation at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, with hopes high for additional podium finishes.
