Former Police Chief Shocks Supporters, Withdraws From Yobe Governorship Race
A former Inspector-General of Police has withdrawn from the Yobe State governorship race ahead of the 2027 general elections, citing consultations with political stakeholders and commitment to party unity.
The former police chief announced his decision in a statement, explaining that the move was made after extensive discussions with supporters, party leaders, and associates within the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to the statement, the withdrawal was aimed at strengthening cohesion within the party and avoiding internal political divisions that could affect the APC’s chances in the forthcoming elections.
The retired police boss reportedly thanked his supporters and campaign team for their loyalty and encouragement throughout the consultation period. He also urged party members to remain united and committed to the development of Yobe State and the success of the APC.
Political observers say the development reflects ongoing strategic negotiations and consensus-building efforts among political actors ahead of the APC primaries. Analysts also note that Yobe remains a key stronghold of the ruling party, making the governorship contest highly significant ahead of the 2027 elections.
The withdrawal adds to the growing wave of political realignments, endorsements, and negotiations currently shaping Nigeria’s political landscape as preparations for the next election cycle intensify nationwide.
