FG to Publish Detailed Report on Fuel Subsidy Savings, Says Oyedele

The Federal Government has announced plans to publish a comprehensive report detailing how savings from the removal of fuel subsidy have been utilised since the policy was introduced in 2023. Minister of State for Finance, Taiwo Oyedele, said the report is aimed at improving transparency and addressing public concerns over the management of funds generated by the reform.

Speaking at a public policy forum, Oyedele acknowledged that many Nigerians have questioned whether the sacrifices resulting from the removal of fuel subsidy have translated into tangible benefits. He said the forthcoming report would provide a clear account of the revenue generated, its allocation and the projects financed with the proceeds, enabling citizens to assess the impact of the government's fiscal reforms.

According to the minister, the report will outline how subsidy savings have supported infrastructure development, social investment programmes and interventions aimed at stabilising the economy. He stressed that the government's objective is to demonstrate accountability while reinforcing public confidence in its reform agenda.

Oyedele reiterated that the removal of fuel subsidy was a necessary but difficult decision taken to eliminate longstanding distortions in the economy and reduce the fiscal burden on government finances. He argued that although the policy initially triggered higher living costs, it has improved public revenue, strengthened fiscal sustainability and created greater room for investment in critical sectors.

He added that the administration remains committed to ensuring that the benefits of the reforms are felt by ordinary Nigerians through improved public services and targeted social interventions. The minister expressed confidence that publishing the detailed report would help dispel misconceptions and promote informed public debate on the country's economic reforms.
