Ex-Governor Udom Emmanuel Reaffirms Support for Tinubu Despite Security Challenges in South-South
Former Akwa Ibom Governor Udom Emmanuel has declared his continued support for President Bola Tinubu and the APC, saying security challenges in the South-South will not weaken his loyalty.
Former Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, has publicly reiterated his unwavering support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring that his commitment to the “Renewed Hope” agenda remains firm despite escalating security challenges across the South-South region.
In a statement issued on Monday through his media office, the former governor, who served two terms under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform, dismissed rumours suggesting he was reconsidering his political alignment. He described such reports as “the work of political mischief makers” aimed at creating unnecessary tension within the political class.
Emmanuel’s declaration is significant given his stature as one of the most influential political figures in the South-South. His open backing of President Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections is being interpreted by political observers as a strategic realignment that could further weaken the PDP’s traditional stronghold in the region.
The former governor acknowledged the rising cases of kidnapping, cultism, and pipeline vandalism in parts of the South-South, particularly in Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River States. However, he argued that these challenges should not be used as an excuse to abandon national unity or the current leadership at the federal level.
“While we must continue to demand improved security from the Federal Government, it is important that we do not allow criminals to dictate our political choices,” Emmanuel said. “President Tinubu deserves our support to finish the important reforms he has started. The South-South region has benefited from several federal projects under his administration, and we must remain partners in progress.”
He cited ongoing federal interventions in road infrastructure, maritime development, and the gas sector as evidence that the Tinubu government was paying attention to the Niger Delta. Emmanuel also praised the President’s “bold economic decisions,” saying they were necessary sacrifices that would yield long-term benefits for the country.
Political analysts view Emmanuel’s position as a major boost for the APC in the South-South. The region has historically been a PDP stronghold, producing key opposition figures and consistently delivering strong votes against the ruling party in national elections. A prominent defection or sustained endorsement from a leader of Emmanuel’s calibre could shift the balance of power, especially in Akwa Ibom and neighbouring states.
Sources close to the former governor suggest that his decision is influenced by both personal conviction and strategic calculations. Having left office in 2023, Emmanuel is believed to be positioning himself for a more prominent national role, possibly within the APC structure or as a key mobiliser for the South-South in the 2027 presidential contest.
His statement also appears to be a direct response to growing criticism from some PDP loyalists who have accused him of “abandoning the party that made him.” Emmanuel dismissed such criticisms, saying his loyalty is first to the development of Akwa Ibom State and the progress of Nigeria as a whole.
The South-South region has witnessed a resurgence of insecurity in recent months. Reports of kidnapping for ransom, attacks on oil facilities, and cult-related violence have increased, particularly in riverine communities. Many stakeholders have blamed the situation on economic hardship, youth unemployment, and the proliferation of small arms.
President Tinubu’s administration has responded by increasing military and police presence in the region and launching new initiatives under the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs. However, critics argue that these measures have so far yielded limited results, with many communities still living in fear.
Emmanuel’s decision to publicly back Tinubu despite these challenges is being interpreted as a calculated political move. By aligning with the centre, he may be hoping to attract more federal projects and interventions to Akwa Ibom while strengthening his own influence within the emerging power blocs ahead of 2027.
The PDP in Akwa Ibom has so far remained silent on Emmanuel’s latest statement. However, sources within the party say there is growing discomfort among some members who feel the former governor is gradually pulling away from the opposition fold.
On the other hand, the APC in the South-South has welcomed the endorsement. The zonal leadership described Emmanuel as “a leader of conscience” whose support validates the Tinubu administration’s policies in the region.
As the countdown to the 2027 general elections continues, Emmanuel’s position is likely to trigger further realignments. Several other PDP leaders in the South-South are reportedly watching closely to see how the political wind blows before making their own decisions.
For now, the former governor has made his position clear: despite the security challenges and economic difficulties facing the nation, he remains committed to supporting President Tinubu and the APC’s vision for Nigeria.
