EPL: Hull City Beat Middlesbrough, Become Third Championship Team to Win Promotion
Hull City secured promotion to the Premier League after a last-minute Oli McBurnie goal sealed a 1–0 win over Middlesbrough in a dramatic Championship play-off final at Wembley Stadium.
Hull City have secured promotion to the Premier League after a dramatic 1–0 victory over Middlesbrough in the Championship play-off final on Saturday.
The win marks a remarkable rise for Hull, who become the first team since Blackpool to finish sixth in the regular season and still earn promotion through the play-offs, underlining one of the most unlikely late-season success stories in recent Championship history.
The decisive moment came deep into stoppage time, in the 94th minute, when Oli McBurnie reacted quickest to a goalkeeping mistake. A cross into the box was mishandled after goalkeeper Sol Brynn punched the ball weakly into a dangerous area, allowing McBurnie to pounce and steer the ball home.
The goal sparked wild celebrations among Hull players and supporters, sealing their return to the top flight of English football.
For Middlesbrough, the defeat adds further frustration to an already turbulent campaign. The club, which had earlier been reinstated into the play-offs following issues linked to the Spygate scandal (Southampton case), will remain in the Championship for another season despite coming within minutes of promotion.
Hull City will now join promoted sides Coventry City and Ipswich Town in the Premier League next season, completing the trio of clubs stepping up from the second tier.
The victory is also seen as a reward for Hull’s resilience throughout the play-off campaign, where they battled through tightly contested knockout matches before producing a late moment of quality in the final.
Managerial staff and fans alike described the result as a turning point for the club, with promotion expected to bring significant financial benefits and renewed optimism ahead of the new season.
For Middlesbrough, however, it is another missed opportunity to return to the Premier League, extending their stay in England’s second division despite strong spells during the season.
