Ekiti First Lady Leads Campaign Against Sexual Harassment in Tertiary Institutions

The First Lady of Ekiti State, Dr Olayemi Oyebanji, has reaffirmed the state government's commitment to tackling sexual harassment in tertiary institutions, calling for stronger preventive measures, institutional reforms and collective action to protect students from abuse. Speaking at a stakeholders' engagement on sexual harassment in higher institutions, Mrs Oyebanji described the menace as a serious threat to students' safety, dignity and academic development. She stressed that educational institutions must remain safe spaces where learners can pursue their studies without fear of intimidation, exploitation or victimisation.

The First Lady urged school authorities to strengthen internal policies against sexual misconduct, establish effective reporting mechanisms and ensure victims receive the necessary support without facing stigma or retaliation. She also encouraged students to speak up against abuse and report offenders through appropriate channels.

Mrs Oyebanji called on parents, government agencies, civil society organisations and educational administrators to work together in addressing the challenge, noting that sustained awareness campaigns and strict enforcement of existing regulations are essential to curbing sexual harassment on campuses.

She reaffirmed the Ekiti State Government's resolve to promote a culture of respect, accountability and zero tolerance for sexual harassment across tertiary institutions, expressing confidence that coordinated efforts would help create a safer and more conducive learning environment for all students.
