Court Remands Lagos Teacher Over Alleged Defilement of 15-Year-Old Student

An Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State has remanded a lesson teacher, identified simply as Michael, at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre over the alleged sexual defilement of a 15-year-old student in the Ketu area of the state.

The court’s order came after the suspect was formally arraigned following an extensive police investigation. The matter was subsequently adjourned until August 24 for a full hearing. According to official reports, Michael allegedly sexually assaulted the teenager on multiple occasions inside a local tutorial centre and issued threats to intimidate her into keeping the incidents secret.

The development follows significant public attention and earlier concerns raised by the survivor’s family. Mrs. Zainab Musa, the survivor’s mother, had accused certain police officers handling the matter of attempting to frustrate the prosecution. She alleged that officers tried pressuring her family into accepting a monetary settlement of N200,000 to withdraw the case.

Reacting to the claims, the Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, CSP Abimbola Adebisi, dismissed the allegation as entirely untrue. She assured the public that the command remained fully committed to seeking justice for the victim and ensuring the law took its proper course.

Adebisi explained that the incident was initially reported at the Ketu Police Station on July 13, leading to the immediate arrest and detention of the suspect. However, arraignment was delayed on July 15 after Michael collapsed while preparations were underway to bring him before the court in the presence of the survivor and her mother.

He was immediately rushed to the Lagos State Emergency Hospital at Toll Gate for medical treatment before being transferred to Gbagada General Hospital. The hospitalisation prompted advocacy groups, including Ololade Ajayi of the DOHS Cares Foundation, to call on the Lagos State Commissioner of Police to closely monitor the case to ensure the suspect did not evade prosecution.

With the suspect now discharged from the medical facility and remanded in custody, the police reaffirmed that formal court proceedings will move forward as scheduled on August 24.
