A court has sentenced a fraudster to two years' imprisonment for defrauding a victim through a fake car auction scheme, reaffirming the judiciary's resolve to punish financial crimes and protect unsuspecting members of the public.

The convict was found guilty after prosecutors established that he deceived the victim into paying for vehicles purportedly offered through an auction programme. Investigations revealed that the auction was fictitious, with the accused collecting money under false pretences without delivering the promised vehicles.

During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence linking the defendant to the fraudulent transaction, while the court held that the facts before it proved the offence beyond reasonable doubt. The judge subsequently convicted the defendant, imposing a two-year jail term in line with the applicable law.

The court also stressed the need for Nigerians to exercise caution when engaging in online transactions and vehicle purchases, warning against making payments without proper verification of sellers or auction platforms.
