Correctional Service Denies Robbing Kuje Inmate of N120m

The Nigerian Correctional Service has dismissed reports alleging that an inmate at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kuje, Abuja, was robbed of valuables worth over N120 million during a routine search operation.

In a statement on Friday, Service Public Relations Officer CSC Jane Osuji described the allegation as false, misleading and inconsistent with established custodial procedures.

“The allegation is false, misleading and inconsistent with the operational realities and established procedures governing custodial facilities in the country,” Osuji said.

The Service explained that the operation in question was a routine security search conducted in line with standard procedures aimed at maintaining order and discipline within the facility.

It added that all recovered prohibited items were properly documented, stressing that inmates are not permitted to keep unauthorised items or large sums of money while in custody.

According to the NCoS, records from the Kuje facility showed that the alleged valuables were neither declared upon admission nor found during the search operation.

“There is no official record supporting the allegation that the said prohibited valuables were in the custody of the inmate(s),” Osuji stated.

The Service further noted that the items reportedly involved are classified as contraband and therefore not permitted in custodial facilities under its regulations.

It also said no formal complaint of theft or loss had been filed by any inmate or relevant party through official channels.

The NCoS maintained that the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kuje, remains “calm, peaceful and secure,” urging the public and media to avoid spreading unverified claims.

The agency encouraged journalists to seek clarification through official communication channels to ensure accuracy in reporting.
