Commonwealth Games: Tinubu Lauds Team Nigeria's 24-Medal Feat, Pledges More Investment in Sports

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Team Nigeria for its impressive performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where the country won 24 medals to finish as Africa's highest-ranked nation. The President described the achievement as a reflection of the resilience, discipline and determination of Nigerian athletes.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu commended the athletes, coaches and officials for representing Nigeria with distinction on the international stage. He said the team's performance had made the nation proud and inspired millions of Nigerians at home and abroad.

The President reaffirmed his administration's commitment to strengthening sports development, promising increased investment in sports infrastructure, athlete welfare, talent discovery and grassroots programmes. He noted that the government would continue to create an enabling environment for athletes to excel and compete successfully at major international competitions.

Tinubu also praised the National Sports Commission, sports federations and other stakeholders for their contributions to Nigeria's success at the Games.
