Combating 'Japa': Lagos State Announces Dedicated Medical University to Boost Workforce

Eromsele Samuel · · 12

The Lagos State Government has formally unveiled plans to establish a specialized, state-of-the-art University of Medicine and Health Sciences. The bold infrastructural play is designed to counter the debilitating impact of the "Japa" phenomenon, which has seen thousands of highly trained Nigerian medical professionals emigrate abroad for better economic opportunities.

Announced during a 2026 ministerial press briefing, the state's executive plan focuses on aggressively expanding localized medical training pipelines. By building an institutional center solely dedicated to medical disciplines, the government aims to multiply the annual graduation rates of homegrown doctors, nurses, radiographers, and medical laboratory scientists.

State representatives indicated that providing world-class learning facilities locally, coupled with planned retention incentives, represents the most sustainable long-term solution to maintaining hospital staffing levels and securing the health security of Nigeria’s most populated commercial hub.
