Bruno Fernandes Surpasses Cristiano Ronaldo's Historic Manchester United Legacy

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has cemented his place in club history by securing a record-breaking fifth Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award, moving past the totals of club legends Cristiano Ronaldo and David de Gea.

The announcement, made on Friday, rewards the 31-year-old playmaker for an exceptional individual campaign that has helped steer United to a strong third-place position under manager Michael Carrick, safely securing a return to the UEFA Champions League. Since the inception of the accolade in 1988, no other player has claimed it five times. Fernandes previously won the award in 2020, 2021, 2024, and 2025, and by winning his latest crown, he becomes only the second player after De Gea to complete a hat-trick of consecutive victories.

Prior to this victory, Fernandes shared the record with Ronaldo (who won it in 2004, 2007, 2008, and 2022) and De Gea (2014, 2015, 2016, and 2018). The fan-voted honor underscores the Portuguese midfielder’s status as the definitive modern talisman at Old Trafford, rising above early-season squad instability and managerial transitions to guide the team on the pitch.

Fernandes’ historic award is backed by phenomenal individual statistics, particularly his immense creativity. The captain has registered 19 assists in the Premier League this season while creating a staggering 124 chances—the fourth-highest total in a single campaign in the competition's history. With two domestic fixtures remaining against Nottingham Forest and Brighton, Fernandes is positioned just one assist away from matching the all-time single-season Premier League record of 20 assists, held jointly by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
