Biodun Oyebanji Becomes First Ekiti Governor To Win Re-election

Governor Biodun Oyebanji of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has made history by becoming the first incumbent governor in Ekiti State to win re-election.

Oyebanji secured victory in the 2026 Ekiti governorship election after defeating 13 other candidates, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Dr Wole Oluyede, and African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Dare Bejide.

The victory marks a significant milestone in the political history of Ekiti State, as no sitting governor had previously succeeded in securing a second consecutive term since the state was created in 1996.

Although former governors Ayo Fayose and Kayode Fayemi returned to office after leaving government and contesting again, neither achieved consecutive tenure as incumbent governors.

Oyebanji’s re-election has therefore broken a 30-year political jinx in the state, making him the first governor to be returned by voters for another term without leaving office.

The election also attracted national attention as it served as a major test of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) preparedness ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Observers had closely monitored the conduct of the poll, particularly issues surrounding technology, accreditation, result transmission and security arrangements.

The APC’s performance across the state’s 16 local government areas was described by party supporters as a strong endorsement of Oyebanji’s administration and its policies.

Political analysts said the outcome could influence strategies and alliances ahead of the 2027 elections, with parties expected to review their approaches based on lessons from the Ekiti contest.

The election was also praised for its largely peaceful conduct, with stakeholders describing the process as a reflection of the state’s growing democratic maturity.

President Bola Tinubu and several APC leaders congratulated Oyebanji on the victory, describing it as a reward for his leadership and development efforts.

Oyebanji is now expected to begin preparations for his second term, with supporters urging him to consolidate on achievements recorded in infrastructure, education, healthcare, agriculture and other sectors.

Meanwhile, opposition parties are expected to reassess their strategies ahead of future electoral contests as Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general elections.
