Bandits Overrun Military Post, Abduct 70 Residents in Zamfara Community

Suspected bandits have reportedly launched a deadly attack on Kasuwar-Daji community in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State, overrunning a military outpost, killing four soldiers and abducting about 70 residents.

The attack, which reportedly occurred on Saturday night, was disclosed by security analyst and journalist Bakatsine in a post shared on his verified X account on Sunday.

According to him, the armed attackers stormed the community in large numbers and first targeted the military outpost located in the area.

The assailants allegedly overpowered the troops after a fierce exchange of gunfire, killing four soldiers and injuring several others.

Bakatsine further claimed that the attackers set a military Hilux patrol vehicle and soldiers’ accommodation ablaze before additional troops arrived from Gusau, the Zamfara State capital, to reinforce the position.

Following the assault on the military base, the gunmen reportedly invaded the community, where they abducted approximately 70 residents.

Most of those kidnapped were said to be women and children.

The attackers also allegedly looted several shops and carted away food items, valuables and other goods before fleeing the area.

Describing the incident as another devastating blow to communities battling insecurity in Zamfara State, Bakatsine lamented the continued attacks on rural settlements despite ongoing military operations.

He wrote that the attack had once again left families traumatised and communities living in fear, questioning how many more lives would be affected before lasting security is achieved.

The latest incident adds to a series of attacks by armed groups across Zamfara and neighbouring states, where bandits have repeatedly targeted communities, security formations and travellers.

Authorities have continued to intensify military operations aimed at dismantling criminal camps and restoring peace across the North-West, but attacks on remote communities have persisted.

Residents of affected areas have repeatedly called for stronger security presence and improved intelligence gathering to prevent further attacks and protect vulnerable communities.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the Nigerian Army nor the Zamfara State Government had issued an official statement confirming the attack or the reported casualties.

Security agencies are also yet to provide details on efforts to rescue the abducted residents or apprehend those responsible for the assault.
