Balogun Apologises to US Fans After World Cup Exit
United States forward Folarin Balogun has apologised to fans after the team’s World Cup exit, admitting their performance fell short when it mattered most.
United States forward Folarin Balogun has apologised to supporters following the country’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, admitting the team failed to deliver when it mattered most.
The Monaco striker made the remarks after the United States suffered a 4–1 defeat to Belgium in the Round of 16, bringing an end to the co-hosts’ campaign.
Balogun, who started the match, acknowledged the disappointment felt by both the players and supporters after the heavy defeat.
In a message shared on social media, the 25-year-old described the tournament as a painful experience and expressed regret over the team’s inability to progress further.
“My debut World Cup. It hurts to wait four years to compete at the highest level our sport has to offer,” he wrote.
“I want to say sorry to our fans. It was not good enough when it mattered most and we let you down.”
Despite the setback, Balogun expressed confidence in the future of football in the United States, insisting the country’s growing talent, passion and belief would lead to greater success in years ahead.
He said the disappointment of the tournament would serve as motivation for the team to return stronger at future competitions.
Balogun’s participation in the knockout fixture had attracted widespread attention after FIFA overturned the automatic one-match suspension that followed his red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The decision generated debate among football fans and officials, with some questioning the circumstances surrounding the reversal.
Reflecting on the controversy, Balogun said he accepted both the original dismissal and the subsequent decision that cleared him to play against Belgium.
He maintained that his responsibility was to focus on football and help his team on the pitch.
The striker also admitted that Belgium deserved their victory, describing the European side as the better team on the day.
With the World Cup now over for the United States, Balogun is expected to return to club football with French side Monaco.
The forward has also been linked with a possible move during the summer transfer window, although no official announcement has been made regarding his future.
