ATIKU BLASTS TINUBU OVER ‘SLOW RESPONSE’ TO SOUTH AFRICA XENOPHOBIC ATTACKS
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticised President Bola Tinubu over what he described as a slow and inadequate response to the ongoing xenophobic attacks against Nigerians and other African nationals in South Africa.
Reacting to reports of renewed violence targeting foreign nationals, Atiku said the Federal Government’s silence and delayed reaction were “embarrassing” and below expectations for a country with Nigeria’s influence in Africa.
The former PDP presidential candidate stated that Nigerians living abroad deserve immediate diplomatic protection and stronger intervention from the government whenever their safety is threatened. He urged the Tinubu administration to engage South African authorities urgently and ensure the protection of affected citizens.
Atiku also warned that repeated xenophobic violence against Nigerians in South Africa could damage long-standing relations between both countries if not decisively addressed.
The comments come amid growing concerns across Africa following fresh anti-migrant attacks in parts of South Africa. Ghana recently announced plans to evacuate about 300 of its citizens due to the escalating violence and safety fears.
The Nigerian government is yet to issue a detailed official response regarding the latest wave of attacks at the time of filing this report.
