2027: List Nnamdi Kanu’s Appeal In 14 Days Or We’ll Boycott Election

The Indigenous People of Biafra has reportedly given the Nigerian authorities 14 days to ensure that the appeal filed by its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu, is listed for hearing, threatening to boycott the 2027 general elections if the demand is not met.

The ultimatum was attributed to Chris Nwaọgụ, who heads the fourth administration of IPOB’s Directorate of State.

The demand centres on Kanu’s appeal against his conviction and life sentence imposed by the Federal High Court in Abuja in November 2025. Kanu subsequently filed an appeal challenging his conviction and the sentences imposed on him.

His legal team has maintained that the appeal process has progressed, with the Record of Appeal transmitted to the Court of Appeal in March 2026 and Kanu’s Appellant’s Brief filed in June.

Kanu’s family has also called for the appellate court to urgently schedule the case, arguing that the prolonged delay in hearing matters concerning his liberty is unacceptable.

The reported IPOB demand does not seek an immediate judgment in Kanu’s favour but calls for the appeal to be formally listed so that the legal arguments can be heard and determined by the court.

IPOB’s position has introduced the 2027 elections into an already sensitive legal dispute surrounding Kanu’s detention and conviction.

The organisation has historically advocated for the creation of an independent Biafran state and has remained a major political and security issue in southeastern Nigeria.

The threatened election boycott could have implications for voter participation, particularly in the South-East, where electoral turnout has previously been affected by insecurity, political dissatisfaction and separatist-related tensions.

The group’s reported ultimatum also comes as political parties across Nigeria intensify preparations for the 2027 elections.

IPOB has previously taken positions on electoral participation in the South-East, while its leadership has at different times called for political and legal action concerning Kanu’s detention.

Kanu’s case has attracted significant attention from political leaders, traditional rulers, civil society organisations and his supporters, many of whom have called for either his release or an accelerated judicial process.

The Federal Government has maintained that Kanu’s case remains a matter for the courts, while his legal representatives continue to challenge his conviction through the appellate process.

The Court of Appeal has not been publicly confirmed to have fixed a hearing date in response to the latest 14-day demand.

The reported ultimatum therefore places renewed attention on the judiciary as well as the political consequences of Kanu’s continued detention.

If the appeal is not listed within the period given, IPOB’s threatened boycott could become another major issue in preparations for the 2027 elections.

The development further highlights the intersection of Kanu’s legal battle, separatist politics and electoral participation in Nigeria’s South-East.
