Atiku Asks N’Assembly to Summon CBN Governor, Accountant-General Over Conflicting PFIPC Accounts

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has called on the National Assembly to summon the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Accountant-General of the Federation over conflicting accounts regarding the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC) bank accounts.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said the contradictory positions taken by the CBN and the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF) have raised serious concerns about transparency and accountability within the Tinubu administration.

According to Atiku, testimony presented by the CBN before the House of Representatives contradicted the earlier position of the OAGF concerning the opening of the PFIPC accounts.

He argued that the differing explanations suggest an attempt to conceal the truth, insisting that both versions of events cannot be correct.

“This is where the cover-up appears to begin. One institution denied authorising the opening of the PFIPC accounts and alleged forgery, while another stated that the accounts were opened on the directive of the Accountant-General after due process was followed,” Atiku said.

The former presidential candidate described the situation as a credibility crisis, warning that conflicting narratives from two of Nigeria’s most important financial institutions undermine public confidence in government.

He urged President Bola Tinubu to clarify which account he believes and to immediately order an independent investigation into the matter.

According to Atiku, every delay in resolving the controversy strengthens public suspicion that the administration is prioritising its image over accountability.

He also criticised the silence of the Attorney-General of the Federation, saying the absence of official legal guidance has further deepened public concern.

Atiku called on the National Assembly to invite both the CBN Governor and the Accountant-General to appear before its investigative committee under oath to explain the discrepancies in their respective accounts.

He argued that if a single transaction could generate conflicting explanations from the country’s leading financial authorities, lawmakers must determine whether broader institutional failures or oversight lapses exist.

The former vice-president maintained that only a transparent investigation would restore public confidence and establish the facts surrounding the PFIPC accounts, urging the government to ensure accountability and strengthen confidence in Nigeria’s financial management institutions.
