Argentina Complains to FIFA Over Spain’s Alleged World Cup Final Advantage
Argentina have lodged a complaint with FIFA, alleging Spain received an unfair scheduling advantage before the World Cup final due to longer recovery and better preparations.
Argentina have lodged a complaint with FIFA, alleging that Spain enjoyed an unfair advantage in the build-up to Sunday’s FIFA World Cup final because of scheduling and logistical arrangements.
The complaint comes as the defending champions prepare to face Spain in the 2026 World Cup final after both sides booked their places through contrasting semi-final victories.
Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni expressed frustration over what he described as unequal conditions affecting his team’s preparations ahead of the title decider.
According to Scaloni, Spain benefited from having an additional day to recover after defeating France 2-0 in their semi-final, while Argentina had to endure a physically demanding encounter against England before securing a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory.
The Argentine coach argued that the difference in recovery time placed his players at a disadvantage before the final.
Scaloni also criticised FIFA over the team’s training schedule after arriving in New York for the championship match.
Speaking during his pre-match press conference, he said the squad arrived late at night and was then required to train in hot afternoon conditions shortly afterwards because of official media commitments.
“We are currently resting as we arrived last night around 11:00,” Scaloni said.
“Today, we were compelled to train at a time that was not ideal for us. However, due to the press conference and other commitments, we had to conduct a brief and unusual training session, which did not allow us to practice effectively.”
He added that Argentina’s immediate priority was helping players recover physically before making final decisions on the starting lineup.
“Our focus is on recovery, and we will assess how the players are feeling, as some are not at full fitness. We will evaluate their condition,” he said.
Despite the concerns, Scaloni insisted his team remained focused on the task ahead while acknowledging the quality of their opponents.
“We approach the game with a focus on ourselves, while also being aware of the strengths of our opponent,” he added.
The Argentine coach also praised the support his team has received throughout the tournament, saying the encouragement from supporters had inspired the players to pursue another World Cup triumph.
Argentina are seeking to retain the title they won in Qatar in 2022, while Spain are aiming to lift the World Cup trophy for the second time after their historic success in 2010.
Neither FIFA nor the Spanish Football Federation had publicly responded to Argentina’s complaint as of the time of filing this report.
