Algeria revived their hopes of reaching the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after coming from behind to defeat Jordan 2-1 in a Group J encounter played on Monday in Santa Clara.

The North Africans recovered from an early setback to secure a crucial victory that leaves qualification from the group still within their grasp heading into the final round of matches.

Jordan, making their World Cup debut, stunned Algeria when Nizar Al-Rashdan opened the scoring to put the Asian side ahead and raise hopes of a historic result.

However, Algeria responded positively and gradually took control of the contest as they searched for an equaliser.

Their persistence paid off when forward Amine Gouiri found the back of the net to level the score and restore parity before the interval.

The equalising goal shifted momentum in Algeria’s favour as they continued to push forward in search of a winner.

Jordan defended resolutely for much of the second half and appeared on course to earn a valuable point that would keep their slim qualification hopes alive.

But Algeria eventually broke through in the closing stages of the match.

Nadhir Benbouali emerged as the hero for the North Africans when he scored in the 82nd minute, completing the comeback and handing his side all three points.

The victory significantly improves Algeria’s prospects of advancing to the Round of 16.

Earlier on Monday, Argentina defeated Austria 2-0 in the other Group J fixture, a result that left the South Americans firmly in control of the group standings.

Argentina now top Group J with six points from two matches and have already strengthened their chances of progressing to the knockout phase.

Austria and Algeria are level on three points, setting up a decisive final group match between both teams.

Algeria will face Austria in Kansas City on Saturday in what is expected to be a winner-takes-all encounter for a place in the next round.

Jordan, meanwhile, have been eliminated from the tournament following their second defeat and will conclude their World Cup campaign against Argentina in Arlington, Texas.

Although their debut appearance has ended in disappointment, Jordan’s participation remains a significant milestone for the nation’s football history.
