Akpabio Mourns Fasoranti, Says Nigeria Has Lost a Patriot
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has paid tribute to late Afenifere leader Reuben Fasoranti, describing him as a patriot and elder statesman whose legacy of integrity and public service will endure.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has expressed grief over the death of Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, the National Leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, describing his passing as a significant loss to Nigeria.
Fasoranti died on Tuesday, October 20, at the age of 100, after a lifetime devoted to education, public service, democratic advocacy and the advancement of Yoruba interests.
In a condolence statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, Akpabio described the late elder statesman as a patriot whose commitment to integrity, principled leadership and the common good would continue to inspire generations of Nigerians.
He said Fasoranti belonged to a generation of leaders distinguished by strong convictions, selfless service and dedication to national development.
According to Akpabio, the deceased made lasting contributions to Nigeria’s socio-political development, democratic governance and the pursuit of justice. He added that Fasoranti’s influence extended beyond ethnic and political boundaries, demonstrating the importance of constructive engagement and respect for democratic ideals.
The Senate President noted that Fasoranti’s century-long life left an enduring example of courage, service and fidelity to his principles. He stressed that true leadership should be measured by the values upheld, the people served and the positive impact made on society.
Akpabio extended his condolences to the Fasoranti family, Afenifere leaders and members, the people of Akure, the Ondo State Government and the Yoruba nation.
He urged the bereaved family to draw comfort from the late leader’s long and consequential life, while praying for strength for those mourning him and for the peaceful repose of his soul.
Fasoranti was a prominent educationist, politician and pro-democracy activist who became one of the leading figures in the political tradition associated with Chief Obafemi Awolowo. His death has prompted tributes from political leaders across Nigeria, who have recognised his contributions to public life and democratic development.
