Abducted Kebbi High Court Judge Regains Freedom After One Week in Captivity

Justice Faruku Hassan Bunza of the Kebbi State High Court has regained his freedom after spending one week in the custody of his abductors. The judge, who was kidnapped from his residence in Bunza Local Government Area on July 26, 2026, was released on Monday and has safely reunited with his family.

The Kebbi State Police Command confirmed the judge's release, stating that both his family and the state Ministry of Justice had verified that he returned home safely. Police spokesperson, SP Bashir Usman, disclosed that although the kidnappers demanded a ransom during the period of captivity, the command maintained its policy against the payment of ransom.

According to the police, security agencies have intensified investigations to identify and arrest those responsible for the abduction. The command appealed to members of the public to provide useful information that could aid ongoing efforts, assuring residents that all information would be treated confidentially.

A family member expressed gratitude over the judge's safe return, describing the development as a moment of relief and thanksgiving after days of uncertainty. The family also appreciated the support received from the Kebbi State Judiciary, security agencies, the state government, friends and residents who stood by them with prayers and encouragement throughout the ordeal. However, they declined to reveal the circumstances surrounding the judge's release, saying details would be made public at a later time.

Justice Bunza's abduction had sparked widespread concern within the legal community and renewed fears over the worsening security situation in parts of northwestern Nigeria. His release has brought relief to the judiciary, his family and residents of Kebbi State, while security agencies continue efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice.
