2027 Presidential Poll: Group Petitions INEC Over Tinubu’s Eligibility, Seeks Certificate Investigation

A civil society organisation, the Centre for Reform and Public Advocacy (CRPA), has petitioned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), requesting a fresh review of President Bola Tinubu’s educational qualifications ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The petition, dated June 19 and signed by a consortium of lawyers led by Kalu Agu, urged the electoral commission to clarify the authenticity of academic credentials submitted by Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election.

According to the group, questions surrounding the President’s educational records and related documentation remain unresolved and require official clarification from INEC before the next electoral cycle.

The petition specifically referenced the certificate from Chicago State University that formed part of Tinubu’s documents submitted to the commission during the 2023 election process.

The organisation alleged that discrepancies existed in some of the educational information linked to the President, including claims relating to his attendance at Government College Lagos.

The group argued that such issues raised concerns about the validity of documents allegedly used in securing admission into Chicago State University and subsequently presented to INEC.

CRPA further urged the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to provide a legal interpretation of the implications of the allegations, particularly as they relate to constitutional provisions governing eligibility for elective office.

The petitioners cited relevant sections of the 1999 Constitution, arguing that candidates found to have presented forged certificates could be disqualified from contesting elections.

According to the organisation, the matter has become increasingly important in view of preparations for the 2027 presidential election and public interest in ensuring transparency and accountability in the electoral process.

The group also disclosed that it had written to the National Youth Service Corps and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation seeking clarification regarding an NYSC discharge certificate allegedly linked to the President.

CRPA maintained that INEC has a constitutional responsibility to ensure that candidates seeking elective office meet all legal requirements and urged the commission to address the concerns raised in the petition.

The organisation warned that it may institute legal proceedings if INEC fails to respond or provide clarification on the issues raised.

As of the time of filing this report, INEC had not issued any official response to the petition.
