A member of the House of Representatives from Bauchi State has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), citing internal crises within the opposition party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

A member of the House of Representatives representing one of the federal constituencies in Bauchi State has dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and pitched his political tent with the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), in a move expected to reshape the political dynamics in the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The lawmaker announced his defection in a letter addressed to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, which was read during plenary on Tuesday.

In the letter, the lawmaker cited unresolved internal disputes, factionalisation, and the absence of a clear direction within the PDP as the primary reasons for his decision to leave the party.

He explained that the lingering crisis within the PDP, both at the national and state levels, had made it increasingly difficult for him to effectively represent his constituents on the platform of the party. The lawmaker noted that despite various efforts to resolve the internal disagreements, the situation had continued to deteriorate, prompting him to seek a more stable political platform.

According to him, his decision to join the APM was informed by the party's commitment to credible representation, good governance, and the welfare of ordinary Nigerians, particularly the people of his federal constituency.

The lawmaker assured his constituents that the defection would not in any way affect his commitment to delivering quality representation and continuing to attract development projects to his constituency.

He further expressed gratitude to his supporters, party members, and constituents for standing by him over the years, urging them to embrace the new party and work with him to consolidate the gains of his representation.

The defection comes amid a wave of political realignments across the country, with several lawmakers, governors, and political stakeholders moving between parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Political observers note that the PDP, once Nigeria's leading opposition party, has continued to grapple with internal crises and high-profile defections, raising questions about its capacity to mount a strong challenge in 2027.

The Allied Peoples Movement (APM), on the other hand, has been positioning itself as an emerging force in Nigeria's political landscape, attracting politicians from various platforms seeking new opportunities ahead of the next general elections.

The defecting lawmaker's move is expected to boost the visibility and structure of the APM in Bauchi State, while further weakening the PDP's grip in the state.

As of the time of this report, the PDP leadership in Bauchi State had not issued an official reaction to the defection.
