2026 World Cup: Ronaldo, Neymar Have Nothing to Prove — Cancelo
Joao Cancelo has defended Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar amid criticism at the 2026 World Cup, insisting their achievements, talent and contributions to football speak for themselves.
Portugal defender Joao Cancelo has insisted that Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar have nothing to prove to critics at the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Cancelo made the statement while speaking with reporters ahead of Portugal’s Group K encounter against Uzbekistan on Tuesday.
The two football superstars have faced criticism during the tournament, with questions raised over their performances and continued roles with their respective national teams.
Ronaldo came under scrutiny following Portugal’s disappointing goalless draw against the Democratic Republic of Congo in their opening fixture, with some fans questioning his impact on the team.
Similarly, Brazil forward Neymar has also received criticism from some sections of supporters and observers over his inclusion in the squad for the competition.
However, Cancelo dismissed suggestions that either player needs to prove himself, saying their careers and achievements have already established their place in football history.
“I don’t think Neymar or Cristiano need to prove anything to anyone,” Cancelo said.
“Their talent and what they have achieved in football speak for themselves. All that talk is just for show.
“Both Cristiano and Neymar know who they are and what they represent for their countries,” he added.
Ronaldo, who continues to captain Portugal at the age of 41, remains one of the most decorated players in football history, having won numerous individual and team honours throughout his career.
The forward has also maintained a remarkable record at international level, becoming Portugal’s all-time leading goalscorer and one of the highest scorers in world football.
Neymar, meanwhile, remains Brazil’s leading attacking figure of his generation and has played a major role for the national team over the past decade.
Cancelo’s comments come as both players continue their pursuit of success at what could be among their final World Cup appearances.
Portugal are seeking a strong campaign after their opening match setback, while Brazil are also aiming to progress deep into the tournament.
The defender urged fans and critics to respect the careers of both players, stressing that their influence on football cannot be measured by individual matches or short periods of criticism.
