2026 World Cup: Mbappe, Messi In Fierce Battle For Golden Boot
Kylian Mbappe leads the 2026 World Cup Golden Boot race ahead of Lionel Messi, with Harry Kane and Erling Haaland remaining close contenders.
France captain Kylian Mbappe has strengthened his lead in the race for the Golden Boot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after scoring his seventh goal of the tournament to help his side secure a place in the quarter-finals.
Mbappe converted a second-half penalty as France edged Paraguay in a tense and closely contested encounter, ensuring qualification for the next stage of the competition.
The Real Madrid forward currently leads the scoring chart ahead of Argentina captain Lionel Messi, with both players on seven goals. However, Mbappe occupies the top spot because he has registered two assists, while Messi is yet to provide an assist in the tournament.
Messi will have an opportunity to draw level or move ahead when Argentina face Egypt in their Round of 16 encounter.
The Inter Miami forward scored his 20th FIFA World Cup goal during Argentina’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Cape Verde in the previous round, further cementing his place among the tournament’s standout performers.
The battle for the Golden Boot remains wide open as several top forwards continue to chase the leading duo.
England captain Harry Kane and Norway striker Erling Haaland are the closest challengers, with both players having scored five goals so far in the competition.
Kane will look to close the gap when England take on co-hosts Mexico in the Round of 16, while Haaland is expected to lead Norway’s attack against Brazil in another highly anticipated knockout fixture.
With the tournament entering its decisive stages, the race for the Golden Boot is expected to intensify as the world’s leading strikers compete for one of football’s most prestigious individual honours.
