2026 World Cup: All 4 Records Messi Broke as Argentina Beat Austria 2-0

Argentina captain Lionel Messi added another chapter to his historic career after breaking four FIFA World Cup records during his side’s 2-0 victory over Austria in their second Group H fixture of the 2026 tournament.

The Argentine superstar scored both goals as the defending champions secured qualification for the knockout stage with a match to spare.

The latest achievements were confirmed by Guinness World Records, which highlighted the records Messi broke during the encounter.

The organisation revealed that Messi became the player with the most FIFA World Cup finals goals, taking his tally to 18.

He also broke the record for the most World Cup appearances by an individual player, reaching 28 matches in the competition.

In addition, the 39-year-old surpassed the previous mark for the most World Cup victories by a player after recording his 18th win.

Messi’s appearance against Austria also saw him set another milestone by becoming the player with the most minutes played in FIFA World Cup history, reaching 2,489 minutes.

Guinness World Records celebrated the achievement in a social media post, describing the moment as another historic milestone in football.

“All the records broken by Lionel Messi today,” the organisation stated before listing his latest accomplishments.

The victory over Austria further strengthened Argentina’s position as one of the favourites to retain the World Cup title.

Messi’s brace secured three important points for the South American champions, who have continued their impressive campaign since arriving at the tournament as holders.

The Inter Miami forward has remained a key figure for Argentina despite his advancing years, continuing to influence matches at the highest level.

His latest record-breaking performance adds to a long list of individual honours achieved throughout his career, including his previous World Cup triumph with Argentina in 2022.

Argentina will now conclude their group-stage campaign against Jordan, with their place in the knockout rounds already guaranteed.

The match will provide Messi and his teammates another opportunity to strengthen their position ahead of the next phase of the competition.

With more records continuing to fall, Messi’s 2026 World Cup campaign is further cementing his status as one of the greatest players in football history.
