YPP Presidential Candidate Faults FG’s 90-Day Economic Plan

The presidential candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), Peter Agada, has faulted the Federal Government’s 90-day economic action plan, arguing that previous interventions have failed to provide sufficient relief to Nigerians facing rising living costs.

Agada made his position known in a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday, following the National Economic Council’s approval of the plan designed to improve food affordability and cushion the effects of economic hardship.

He questioned the timing of the initiative ahead of the 2027 general election, arguing that the government should demonstrate measurable results from its existing policies rather than introduce another set of commitments.

“These promises back and forth are for Nigerians to believe and vote them back into office. So after the election, what happens?” he asked.

The YPP candidate also criticised the Federal Government’s economic management, saying several measures announced since the removal of the petrol subsidy in 2023 had not delivered the expected benefits to households and businesses.

He cited interventions involving funding for manufacturers, micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, agricultural production, conditional grants and compressed natural gas infrastructure, questioning their impact on the cost of living.

Agada further argued that the removal of tariffs on food imports had failed to bring food inflation under control, calling for economic policies that produce tangible improvements in household purchasing power.

He urged Nigerians to scrutinise government announcements and demand evidence of their implementation and outcomes.

The 90-day plan, endorsed by the National Economic Council on Thursday, focuses on five priority areas: food affordability, tax harmonisation, the completion of high-impact projects, the removal of investment bottlenecks and regulated household support.

The council also approved a national dashboard to track projects and strengthen transparency and accountability in the use of public funds.

Agada proposed his campaign council’s LabourDirect ward-to-ward development strategy as an alternative, claiming it could stimulate grassroots economic activities and empower Nigerians within 60 days of implementation.

He said the proposal would incorporate the Labour Direct Information Network, a digital monitoring system intended to track projects, employment, production, taxes and revenue through a single platform.

The candidate urged the Federal Government to consider the proposal, arguing that economic recovery required greater emphasis on local production, job creation and community-level development.

He also called for monthly employment data to help Nigerians assess whether government interventions were generating jobs and improving livelihoods.

Agada maintained that the effectiveness of economic policies should be measured by their practical impact on citizens rather than the announcement of new initiatives, urging the government to demonstrate accountability for its commitments ahead of the 2027 elections.
