World Cup 2026: Morocco Stands Alone as Egypt’s Exit Ends Africa’s Record Breaking Run
Morocco became Africa’s only remaining team at the 2026 World Cup after Egypt’s dramatic defeat to Argentina ended the continent’s historic tournament campaign.
Morocco has emerged as the only African nation remaining in the 2026 FIFA World Cup after Egypt suffered a dramatic 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the Round of 16 on Tuesday.
The result brought an end to Africa’s impressive campaign at the expanded 48-team tournament, leaving the Atlas Lions as the continent’s sole representative in the quarter-finals.
Egypt looked set to join Morocco in the last eight after racing into a two-goal lead against the defending champions at Atlanta Stadium.
Yasser Ibrahim opened the scoring in the 15th minute before Mostafa Ziko doubled the Pharaohs’ advantage early in the second half, putting the North Africans in a commanding position.
However, Argentina mounted a remarkable comeback. Cristian Romero pulled one back before Lionel Messi restored parity with a superb finish. Enzo Fernandez completed the turnaround in stoppage time, sealing a dramatic victory that sent Lionel Scaloni’s side into the quarter-finals.
Argentina will now face Switzerland in their next match as they continue their quest to retain the World Cup title.
Egypt’s elimination means Morocco carries Africa’s hopes into the last eight, where they are scheduled to face France on Thursday.
Africa enjoyed its most successful World Cup campaign in history, with ten nations representing the continent at the tournament. Tunisia, DR Congo, South Africa, Ghana, Cape Verde, Senegal, Algeria, Ivory Coast, Egypt and Morocco all qualified for the finals.
Nine of the ten teams progressed beyond the group stage, with Tunisia being the only African side eliminated before the knockout rounds.
Following the Round of 32, only Morocco and Egypt advanced to the Round of 16, highlighting the continent’s record-breaking performance at the tournament.
Morocco secured their quarter-final place with an impressive 3-0 victory over co-hosts Canada, becoming Africa’s last remaining contender.
Football analyst Femi Fabunmi praised the performances of the African teams but believes Morocco faces a difficult challenge against France.
He noted that France appear to be the strongest team left in the competition but acknowledged that football often produces unexpected results.
Fabunmi added that Africa has continued to close the gap on Europe and South America, expressing optimism that the continent will become even more competitive in future international tournaments.
