France vs Morocco: We Must Be More Efficient in Attack — Deschamps
France coach Didier Deschamps has urged his players to improve their finishing ahead of Thursday’s World Cup quarter-final against Morocco despite scoring 14 goals.
France head coach Didier Deschamps has urged his players to be more clinical in front of goal as they prepare to face Morocco in Thursday’s quarter-final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Despite France leading the tournament’s scoring chart with 14 goals, Deschamps believes his side must make better use of the chances they create if they hope to progress to the semi-finals.
Speaking during his pre-match press conference on Wednesday, the French manager stressed that efficiency in attack could prove decisive against a disciplined Moroccan side.
“We have to be efficient, offensively speaking,” Deschamps said.
“We are efficient but we could have done better on this front. Sometimes you have six chances and score two goals and sometimes you have two chances and score twice. It is more important to be efficient.”
The quarter-final brings back memories of the 2022 FIFA World Cup semi-final, where France defeated Morocco to end the Atlas Lions’ historic campaign in Qatar.
However, Deschamps believes the North Africans have continued to develop and now possess the quality to challenge for the world title after eliminating both the Netherlands and co-hosts Canada on their way to the last eight.
“Morocco’s profile is not the one of Paraguay. We met them four years ago in the semi-finals,” he said.
“They played the AFCON final. They have top individuals. They are not here to play. They are here to win. We have to be ready and perform and deliver against this great team.”
France secured their place in the quarter-finals with a narrow 1-0 victory over Paraguay, courtesy of a Kylian Mbappe penalty.
The France captain has now scored seven goals at the tournament and trails Argentina captain Lionel Messi by one goal in the race for the Golden Boot award.
Mbappe is expected to lead France’s attack once again alongside Ousmane Dembele, Michael Olise and Bradley Barcola as Les Bleus seek another victory.
Deschamps also gave an update on midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, who is recovering from a muscle injury sustained earlier in the competition.
“He feels better, but I cannot say more. He might take part in training today. All other players are available,” the coach said.
He also confirmed that FIFA rejected France’s appeal against Michael Olise’s yellow card against Paraguay, leaving the winger one booking away from suspension if France advance to the semi-finals.
