Egypt Demands FIFA Investigation Into Referees After Controversial World Cup Exit Against Argentina
The Egyptian FA has lodged an official complaint with FIFA demanding the suspension of French referee François Letexier and his VAR crew, claiming blatant officiating errors and favoritism directly caused Egypt's heartbreaking 3-2 Round of 16 exit to Argentina.
The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has officially filed a formal complaint with FIFA, demanding a full investigation into French referee François Letexier and his officiating crew following the Pharaohs' controversial 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the World Cup Round of 16.
EFA President Hany Abo Rida submitted the grievance on Wednesday, alleging "serious refereeing mistakes" and "double standards" that unfairly penalized Egypt and prematurely ended their tournament run. The federation has asked for the removal of the entire refereeing crew, including the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) team, from the remainder of the FIFA World Cup 2026™.
The Controversies That Sparked the Fury
The fixture was plagued by key moments that Egypt claims were handled with an absolute lack of fair play:
- The Disallowed Goal: Early in the match, Egypt's Mostafa Ziko scored what appeared to be the opening goal. However, Letexier disallowed the strike following a VAR intervention, which flagged an alleged foul on Argentina's Lisandro Martínez earlier in the attacking build-up.
- The Denied Penalty: Despite the setback, Ziko scored again minutes later to give Egypt a shocking 2-0 cushion, putting them on the verge of a historic first-ever quarterfinal berth. Argentina clawed their way back via Cristian Romero and Lionel Messi to make it 2-2. In stoppage time, as Argentina pushed for a winner, Egypt strongly argued they were denied a clear penalty when Alexis Mac Allister visibly pulled down Hamdy Fathy inside the box.
- The Winning Blow: The referee ignored the penalty claims, and seconds later, Enzo Fernández netted a dramatic 93rd-minute winner to seal a 3-2 comeback for La Albiceleste.
The EFA's formal complaint mirrors explosive comments made by Egypt's head coach, Hossam Hassan, during his post-match press conference.
"I do not want to put it nicely and talk about hard luck. We have been cheated unfairly today. We have suffered injustice," a furious Hassan told reporters. "We haven't seen respect or fair play... Perhaps they wanted to keep the world champions in the competition."
Hassan went as far as to suggest that "marketing support" and commercial bias heavily favored Lionel Messi's side, ensuring the reigning world champions advanced at the expense of the African contenders. FIFA has yet to issue an official response regarding the EFA's petition or potential disciplinary action over Hassan's comments.
