World Cup 2026: Big Blow for Brazil as Neymar Fails to Recover

Brazil have suffered a significant setback ahead of their opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after star forward Neymar was ruled out of the clash against Morocco due to injury.

The Selecao are set to begin their Group C campaign at MetLife Stadium, but they will do so without one of the most influential players in their squad. Head coach Carlo Ancelotti confirmed the development during a pre-match press conference, ending speculation over Neymar’s availability.

Despite battling a series of injuries in recent years, Neymar was included in Brazil’s 26-man World Cup squad by Ancelotti, who remained confident in the veteran attacker’s ability to contribute during the tournament.

The 34-year-old had not featured for Brazil since 2023 but was selected as part of the squad’s preparations for the competition. His call-up was viewed as a show of faith from Ancelotti, who believed the experienced forward could still play a crucial role in Brazil’s quest for a sixth World Cup title.

However, shortly after joining the squad, Neymar suffered another injury setback, delaying his anticipated return to action.

Reports had suggested the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star was making steady progress in his recovery and could be available for the opening fixture. Those hopes have now been dashed following confirmation from the Brazilian camp.

“He is working very hard to recover as quickly as possible. The expectation is that he will recover and rejoin the group next week,” Ancelotti said.

The Italian coach previously indicated that Brazil would not call up a replacement for Neymar, choosing instead to rely on the depth already available within the squad.

Brazil still possess a wealth of attacking options, including Joao Pedro and Richarlison, who are expected to shoulder greater responsibility during Neymar’s absence.

Following their opening match against Morocco, Brazil will face Haiti and Scotland in their remaining Group C fixtures. The coaching staff remain hopeful that Neymar will recover in time to feature in one or both of those encounters.

His absence from the opening game is undoubtedly a blow for Brazil, but Ancelotti will be counting on the strength and quality of his squad to make a winning start to their World Cup campaign.
