Former Puerto Rican professional boxer Prichard Colón has died at the age of 33, nearly 11 years after suffering a devastating brain injury during a 2015 bout. His father, Richard Colón, confirmed his death on Thursday.

Colón was regarded as one of boxing’s promising young fighters and had won his first 16 professional bouts, including 13 by knockout, before the injury ended his career.

The injury occurred during his October 2015 fight against Terrel Williams in Virginia. Colón complained of dizziness during the bout and alleged that he had been repeatedly struck on the back of the head, illegal blows commonly referred to as “rabbit punches”.

After the ninth round, Colón collapsed and was diagnosed with a subdural haematoma. He underwent emergency brain surgery and remained in a coma for 221 days before eventually leaving hospital. The injury left him with severe neurological disabilities and he required long-term care from his family.

His death has prompted tributes from across the boxing community, with major boxing organisations remembering him for his resilience and the courage he displayed throughout his long recovery.

Colón’s tragic story has also renewed attention on fighter safety and the risks of serious head injuries in boxing.
