Warrington Wolves Reach Super League Grand Final After Controversial Penalty

Warrington Wolves reached the Super League Grand Final for the first time since 2018 after defeating Leeds Rhinos 14-12 in a closely contested semi-final at Headingley Stadium on Friday.

The match was level at 12-12 before Warrington were awarded a penalty with about 14 minutes remaining after James McDonnell was adjudged to have obstructed Warrington captain George Williams while both players chased a kick.

Leeds challenged the decision through their Captain’s Challenge, but the ruling was upheld. Ewan Irwin converted the resulting penalty to give Warrington a 14-12 lead.

The decision became the major talking point of the match, with Leeds head coach Brad Arthur describing it as a difficult penalty that should not have decided a semi-final.

Warrington had taken an early lead through James Bentley before Leeds responded with tries from Ryan Hall and Jake Connor to establish a 12-6 advantage.

The Wolves levelled before half-time when Luke Yates crossed following a George Williams pass, with Irwin converting to make it 12-12 at the interval.

The second half became a defensive battle, with both sides creating opportunities but failing to add to their scores until Irwin’s decisive penalty.

Leeds had a final opportunity to force the match towards extra time after receiving a penalty in the closing seconds. Connor attempted a long-range kick from about 62 metres but his effort fell short, allowing Warrington to secure their place in the final.

The victory puts Warrington within one match of their first Super League title, having last appeared in the Grand Final in 2018.

Warrington will face either Wigan Warriors or Wakefield Trinity in the Grand Final at Old Trafford on October 3.

Leeds, who last won the Super League title in 2017, ended their campaign after a strong regular season but failed to advance from the semi-final.
