WAFU B U-20: Flying Eagles Aim to Seal Group B Top Spot Against Burkina Faso

Defending champions, Nigeria’s Flying Eagles, will be aiming to finish as Group B winners when they face Burkina Faso in their final group-stage match of the WAFU B U-20 Championship on Sunday.

The Flying Eagles have already secured qualification for the semi-finals after winning their opening two matches and now require only a draw to confirm top spot in the group.

Coached by Abdu Maikaba, the seven-time African champions began their title defence with an entertaining 4-2 victory over long-time rivals Ghana, a result that immediately placed them in a strong position in the standings.

Nigeria maintained their impressive form in the second fixture, recording a convincing 3-0 win over Togo’s Sparrow Hawks to book an early place in the last four.

The back-to-back victories have earned the Flying Eagles six points from two matches, leaving them in control of Group B heading into their final game.

Burkina Faso, however, remain in contention after an unbeaten start to the competition.

The Young Stallions opened their campaign with a draw against Togo before claiming victory over Ghana in their second outing to keep their qualification hopes alive.

With four points from two matches, Burkina Faso will be seeking a positive result against Nigeria to strengthen their position and possibly finish at the top of the group if they secure victory.

For the Flying Eagles, avoiding defeat will be enough to retain first place and potentially secure a more favourable semi-final fixture.

Maikaba is expected to balance the need for victory with squad management, as several key players could be rested ahead of the knockout stage while maintaining the team’s winning momentum.

Nigeria have impressed in attack throughout the tournament, scoring seven goals in two matches while also displaying improved defensive organisation after conceding twice in their opening game.

The encounter is expected to provide a stern test for both sides, with Burkina Faso hoping to upset the defending champions and Nigeria aiming to continue their unbeaten run.
