WAFCON 2026: Nnadozie Backs Falcons to Recover After Malawi Defeat

Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie has taken responsibility for Nigeria’s disappointing defeat to Malawi in their opening match of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, expressing confidence that the team can recover.

The Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper made the remarks in a post on her X account on Thursday after the defending champions suffered a 3-2 defeat to tournament debutants Malawi in their Group C opener.

Reacting to the result, Nnadozie admitted the loss was painful but praised the commitment shown by her teammates throughout the encounter.

“This one really hurts. Not the result we wanted, but the fight was real. Left it all on the field, but wasn’t enough to get the three points,” she wrote.

The 24-year-old goalkeeper said the players accepted full responsibility for the performance against a determined Malawian side.

“We take full responsibility for our performance against a very tough opponent. Falls hurt, but we do not stay down.

“Proud of this team,” she added.

Nigeria’s quest for another continental title suffered an unexpected setback after Malawi produced one of the biggest upsets in the history of the competition.

Temwa Chawinga scored twice for the Scorchers, while captain Tabitha Chawinga added the third goal to secure a memorable victory over the nine-time African champions.

The Super Falcons responded late in the game, with captain Rasheedat Ajibade converting a stoppage-time penalty before substitute Uchenna Kanu scored deep into added time.

However, Nigeria’s late comeback proved insufficient as Malawi held on to claim all three points.

The defeat leaves the Super Falcons third in Group C without a point after the opening round of matches, while Malawi and Zambia occupy the top two positions following victories in their respective fixtures.

Nigeria will now turn its attention to a crucial clash against group leaders Zambia on Saturday, knowing that a positive result is essential to keep their hopes of progressing to the knockout stage alive.

The Super Falcons will conclude their group-stage campaign against Egypt on Wednesday as they seek to recover from the opening setback and reignite their pursuit of a record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title.
