Troops Repel Lakurawa Attack on Military Base in Kebbi
Nigerian troops have repelled an attack by suspected Lakurawa terrorists on a military base in Maiyama, Kebbi State, recovering weapons, ammunition, motorcycles and communication equipment.
Troops of Sector 2, Joint Task Force, North West Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have repelled an attack by suspected members of the Lakurawa terrorist group on a Forward Operating Base in Maiyama Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The attack occurred in the early hours of Wednesday when the terrorists, reportedly numbering about 100 and operating on more than 100 motorcycles, stormed the military base with assorted weapons.
The attackers were said to be armed with General Purpose Machine Guns and Rocket-Propelled Grenades.
The troops responded to the attack, forcing the terrorists to withdraw from the area and abandon weapons and other equipment.
The Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force, Lt.-Col. Aliyu Danja, said in a statement on Thursday that troops subsequently conducted exploitation and pursuit operations around the area.
He said the operations led to the recovery of 17 motorcycles, a PKT machine gun, an AK-47 rifle, assorted ammunition and a communication device.
Danja described the recoveries as a significant setback to the operational capability of the terrorist group in the area.
He said the general area remained firmly under the control of the troops, while aggressive patrols, clearance and dominance operations were ongoing to track and neutralise fleeing members of the group.
The military spokesman said Operation FANSAN YAMMA remained committed to protecting communities and denying terrorists freedom of operation within its area of responsibility.
