The attack occurred at about 8 p.m. on Saturday at the Sopp checkpoint in Ungwan Boka, Riyom Local Government Area, where soldiers were on security duty.
Security sources said the assailants opened fire on the troops from different directions, triggering an exchange of gunfire before they fled into nearby bushes.
The spokesperson for Operation Enduring Peace, Capt. Chinonso Oteh, confirmed the incident in Jos on Sunday, describing it as a deliberate and unprovoked attack on the military personnel.
He said troops had restored normalcy in the area and commenced an aggressive pursuit of the attackers to apprehend them and recover the stolen weapons.
Oteh added that security personnel had heightened vigilance around the community to prevent further attacks and reassure residents of their safety.
He urged members of the public to remain calm, continue their lawful activities and provide credible information that could assist security agencies in the ongoing operation.
Residents of the area condemned the attack and called on the military to ensure the arrest of those responsible.
The incident has heightened security concerns in Riyom, an area that has experienced repeated attacks on farming communities and security personnel.
The military said operations would continue to track down the perpetrators and prevent further security breaches.
