Tokyo Police Arrest Nigerian Man Over Alleged Illegal Touting
Tokyo police have arrested a 53-year-old Nigerian man over alleged illegal touting in one of the city's entertainment districts. The arrest is part of an ongoing campaign to curb unlawful street solicitation and protect residents and tourists from related scams.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department has arrested a 53-year-old Nigerian national on suspicion of engaging in illegal touting activities in one of the Japanese capital's entertainment districts. Authorities allege that the suspect persistently approached pedestrians and attempted to direct them to bars and other nightlife establishments in violation of local regulations.
According to investigators, the suspect was taken into custody following complaints from members of the public and business operators over aggressive solicitation. Police said the arrest forms part of an ongoing crackdown on illegal touting, particularly in areas frequented by tourists and nightlife patrons.
Japanese authorities have intensified enforcement against touts in recent years, arguing that such activities are often linked to scams, overcharging and other offences targeting visitors. Police stated that the latest operation is intended to improve public safety and protect the reputation of Tokyo's entertainment districts.
The Nigerian national is currently being questioned as part of the investigation. Police have not disclosed whether additional suspects are being sought but indicated that inquiries are continuing to determine if the suspect acted alone or was connected to a wider network involved in illegal solicitation.
Authorities urged residents and tourists to avoid dealing with street touts and instead patronise licensed establishments directly. They reaffirmed their commitment to enforcing local laws and maintaining order in commercial and entertainment areas across Tokyo.
