Tinubu Needs Support, Not Criticism, To Fix Economy — Ex-Lawmaker
A former lawmaker has urged Nigerians to support President Tinubu’s economic reforms, arguing that constructive cooperation is essential for recovery.
A former lawmaker has called on Nigerians and political stakeholders to support President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to stabilise the economy, arguing that sustained cooperation would be more productive than persistent criticism of the administration.
The former legislator said economic recovery required collective responsibility, patience and constructive engagement, particularly as the government continued implementing policies intended to address longstanding structural problems.
According to the ex-lawmaker, the country’s economic difficulties cannot be resolved overnight, given the challenges confronting public finances, investment, infrastructure and productivity. The former legislator argued that meaningful reforms often require difficult decisions before their benefits become evident.
The comments come amid continuing public debate over the impact of the Tinubu administration’s economic policies, including the removal of petrol subsidies and changes to the foreign-exchange system.
Although the government has defended the reforms as necessary to improve fiscal sustainability and strengthen the economy, many Nigerians continue to face pressure from rising food prices, transportation costs and other essential expenses.
The former lawmaker maintained that criticism should be accompanied by practical alternatives capable of improving the country’s economic outlook. Political parties, business leaders, labour organisations and citizens, the legislator argued, all have roles to play in supporting productive economic activity and promoting national development.
The ex-lawmaker also urged the administration to sustain engagement with Nigerians, explain its policies more clearly and ensure that measures intended to improve economic conditions translate into tangible benefits for households and businesses.
The call for support highlights the continuing disagreement over how the Federal Government should be assessed as it pursues its economic agenda.
While supporters of the administration argue that reforms are necessary to correct structural weaknesses, critics have questioned their implementation and the immediate hardship experienced by households.
Nigeria’s economic recovery will depend not only on policy decisions but also on implementation, investor confidence, job creation and the ability of businesses to expand. Measures that improve purchasing power, strengthen social protection and reduce the cost of doing business will remain important to determining how Nigerians experience the effects of government policies.
The former lawmaker urged Nigerians to contribute to national development while holding public officials accountable for their decisions and results.
