TikTok has agreed to pay the US state of Alabama at least $100 million and impose new restrictions on teenage users, avoiding a trial over allegations that the platform misled parents about measures intended to protect children.

Under the settlement, TikTok will introduce a two-hour daily usage limit for teenagers, restrict access between midnight and 6 a.m., and suspend notifications during school hours.

The company will also strengthen age-verification measures, prohibit beauty filters for teenagers and provide young users with a non-personalised content feed.

The agreement includes a provision for the night-time restriction to be extended to 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. if other social media platforms adopt the same measure.

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall welcomed the settlement, saying it would provide additional protections for young users. The state had alleged that TikTok misled parents about its tools for protecting children from harmful content.

TikTok said its priority remained creating a safe environment for users and that the agreement built on its existing efforts to strengthen safety measures for teenagers.

Under the agreement, TikTok will initially pay Alabama $100 million, with the amount potentially rising to $300 million if other states adopt similar settlements with the company.

The case is part of a wider wave of lawsuits against social media companies in the United States over alleged harm to young users. More than a dozen other states, including California and New York, still have active lawsuits against TikTok.
