Sweden Invites FG To Submit Projects For Financing
Sweden has invited Nigeria’s government to submit viable projects for possible financing and investment under bilateral cooperation.
The Swedish Government has invited the Federal Government to submit viable projects that could benefit from financing and investment opportunities under Sweden’s development and economic cooperation framework.
The invitation is aimed at strengthening economic ties between Nigeria and Sweden and expanding cooperation in areas capable of supporting infrastructure development, job creation and sustainable economic growth.
Sweden’s development financing institutions support projects in sectors including energy, water and sanitation, transport, digital connectivity and healthcare. The Swedish Project Accelerator, operated by Swedfund, works with public-sector project owners in developing countries to prepare infrastructure projects for financing and investment.
The programme can support early-stage project development through feasibility studies, technical and financial assessments, environmental and social evaluations, capacity building and preparation for potential financing.
Swedish institutions can also work with development banks, private investors and Swedish companies to help move viable projects from the planning stage towards implementation.
The latest invitation comes against the backdrop of growing economic cooperation between Nigeria and Sweden.
Both countries have been exploring opportunities to increase bilateral trade, investment and private-sector partnerships, with discussions covering areas such as technology, infrastructure, youth empowerment and skills development.
The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has previously said the two countries were working to strengthen commercial relations and encourage greater participation by businesses from both countries.
Sweden has also expanded its economic presence in Nigeria. Business Sweden opened an office in Lagos as part of efforts to deepen trade and investment relations and support Swedish companies seeking opportunities in the Nigerian market.
For Nigeria, the opportunity could provide another avenue for attracting international capital to projects that meet financing and investment requirements.
However, projects seeking support would need to demonstrate clear development impact, financial viability and alignment with relevant investment and development priorities.
Swedish development financing generally involves an assessment of proposed projects against established government strategies and the objectives of the relevant financing programme.
The invitation therefore provides an opportunity for Nigerian ministries, agencies and other eligible public-sector institutions to identify and present projects that can attract international financing while supporting the country’s broader development objectives.
Further engagement between Nigerian and Swedish authorities is expected to determine the projects that may qualify for consideration and the appropriate financing structures.
