Student Unions Laud FG’s E-DON Initiative as Timely Innovation Transforming Colleges of Education

Student unions across Nigeria have commended the Federal Government for introducing the E-DON initiative, describing it as a timely and innovative intervention that is reshaping the landscape of Colleges of Education in the country. The initiative, which focuses on digital transformation, improved infrastructure, and enhanced learning tools, has been hailed as a significant step toward modernising teacher education and preparing future educators for the demands of a technology-driven society.

The E-DON (Education Digitalisation and Optimisation Network) initiative was launched by the Federal Ministry of Education as part of efforts to address long-standing challenges in Colleges of Education, including outdated curricula, inadequate teaching facilities, poor internet access, and limited exposure to modern pedagogical methods. Since its rollout, the programme has been implemented in several Colleges of Education across the six geopolitical zones, with plans to expand to more institutions in the coming months.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, leaders of major student bodies, including the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and the National Union of Education Students (NUEDS), expressed strong support for the initiative. They noted that the intervention has already begun to yield positive results, particularly in areas such as digital literacy, access to online learning resources, and improved classroom infrastructure.

The National President of NANS, **Comrade Olusola Oladoja**, described the E-DON initiative as one of the most student-centred policies introduced by the current administration. According to him, many students in Colleges of Education had long complained about the lack of modern learning tools and the disconnect between what they are taught and the realities of today’s education system.

“For years, students in Colleges of Education have been trained with outdated methods and limited access to technology,” Oladoja said. “The E-DON initiative is changing that narrative. Students are now being exposed to digital tools, online resources, and innovative teaching methods that will better prepare them for the future of education in Nigeria and beyond.”

The E-DON initiative encompasses several components, including the provision of digital learning platforms, installation of smart classrooms, training of lecturers in modern instructional technologies, and the distribution of digital devices to students. The Federal Government has also partnered with technology firms to develop localised educational content that aligns with the national curriculum while incorporating global best practices.

Education experts say the initiative is particularly significant because Colleges of Education play a critical role in training teachers for primary and secondary schools. With Nigeria facing a shortage of qualified teachers and a growing population of school-age children, improving the quality of teacher education is seen as essential to raising overall educational standards.

The initiative has also been praised for its focus on inclusivity. Several Colleges of Education have reported increased enrolment of female students and persons with disabilities, partly attributed to the improved learning environment and the introduction of assistive technologies under the E-DON programme.

While commending the Federal Government, student leaders and education stakeholders have called for measures to ensure the sustainability of the initiative. They urged the government to allocate adequate funding for maintenance, provide continuous training for lecturers, and expand the programme to more Colleges of Education, especially those in rural and underserved areas.

Some stakeholders also emphasised the need for stronger monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to ensure that the resources deployed under the E-DON initiative are used effectively and that the intended benefits reach the students.

The Federal Ministry of Education has assured stakeholders that the E-DON initiative is part of a broader strategy to reposition teacher education in Nigeria. Officials say the ministry is working with state governments, development partners, and the private sector to scale up the programme and integrate it into the national education reform agenda.

As Nigeria continues to grapple with challenges in its education sector, the E-DON initiative is increasingly being viewed as a model for how technology and innovation can be leveraged to transform teacher training and improve learning outcomes. For the thousands of students in Colleges of Education, the initiative represents a renewed sense of hope that their training will be relevant, modern, and capable of preparing them for the demands of 21st-century classrooms.
