Sowore Returns to Nigeria, Set for 2027 Presidential Campaign

African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has returned to Nigeria from the United States to resume his campaign activities ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Sowore arrived in Nigeria on Sunday after spending time in the United States, where he said he engaged with Nigerians in the diaspora, supporters, activists and other stakeholders.

In a statement issued to journalists, the AAC candidate expressed excitement about returning to his family and the country.

Sowore said his trip to the United States followed what he described as arrests, detention, travel restrictions and the seizure of his international passport by Nigerian security agencies.

During his stay, he also participated in a solidarity march for Palestine in New York and continued his advocacy for voting rights for Nigerians living abroad.

According to his campaign, Sowore’s return marks the beginning of another phase of his nationwide campaign for the 2027 presidential election.

The AAC candidate has repeatedly stated that he intends to contest the election under the party’s platform. The Independent National Electoral Commission has included Sowore among the 18 presidential candidates on its final list for the January 16, 2027 presidential election.

Sowore secured the AAC presidential ticket in May after emerging unopposed at the party’s primary. This will be his third consecutive presidential contest under the platform of the party he founded.

The activist-turned-politician has continued to promote what he describes as a programme of fundamental political and economic change, focusing on issues including corruption, unemployment, security, education, healthcare and workers’ welfare.

His campaign has also rejected calls for the AAC to join a single-candidate opposition coalition ahead of the election.

Following his return, Sowore is expected to proceed to Abuja, where he will also attend to a cybercrime case instituted against him by the State Security Service.

The 2027 presidential election is scheduled for January 16, with 18 candidates currently listed by INEC for the contest.
