South Korea Beat Czech Republic 2-1 To Make Strong World Cup Start
South Korea opened their World Cup campaign with a 2-1 victory over the Czech Republic, with substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu scoring a late winner after an entertaining contest in Guadalajara.
South Korea began their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign on a winning note after defeating the Czech Republic 2-1 in an entertaining Group A encounter on Thursday.
The Koreans dominated large portions of the match but were forced to work hard for victory after the Czech Republic briefly threatened to spoil their impressive performance. Substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu emerged as the hero, scoring the decisive goal 10 minutes from time to secure all three points for his side.
Led by captain Son Heung-min, South Korea started brightly and controlled possession for much of the first half. The former Tottenham Hotspur star was at the heart of most attacking moves and came close to opening the scoring on several occasions.
Son first blasted an effort over the crossbar before producing a brilliant run that saw him beat two defenders. However, his final shot drifted wide, leaving the scores level despite South Korea’s dominance.
The Czech Republic struggled to create clear chances before halftime but remained disciplined defensively to frustrate the Asian side. Their resilience appeared to pay off shortly after the restart when they took the lead against the run of play.
Defender Ladislav Krejci rose highest at the near post to connect with a cross and power a header beyond goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu, stunning the South Korean supporters inside the Guadalajara stadium.
Despite falling behind, South Korea continued to press forward in search of an equaliser. Their persistence was rewarded in the 67th minute through midfielder Hwang In-beom. The playmaker cleverly deceived goalkeeper Matej Kovar by shaping to shoot before delicately lifting the ball into the net.
The equaliser shifted momentum firmly back in South Korea’s favour. The Czech Republic thought they had restored their advantage moments later, but their goal was ruled out, providing a major reprieve for the Koreans.
With 10 minutes remaining, Hwang turned provider. His accurate cross from the right found substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu, who calmly slotted home the winning goal.
The final whistle sparked celebrations among the South Korean players, with Son dropping to the turf in relief and joy. South Korea will next face co-hosts Mexico, while the Czech Republic take on South Africa in their second group matches.
